Ciudad de Diablos

I'll be in Los Angeles from today until the 11th:
Day and Date: Thu., Feb. 1, 2007
Flight: CO795
Depart: Houston, TX (IAH - Intercontinental), 3:45 p.m.
Arrive: Los Angeles, CA (LAX), 5:24 p.m.

Day and Date: Sun., Feb. 11, 2007
Flight: CO294
Depart: Los Angeles, CA (LAX), 8:00 a.m.
Arrive: Houston, TX (IAH - Intercontinental), 1:12 p.m.
I'm still relatively unclued as to what i might want to do there aside from play poker and visit various important personages (including [info]punkalicia. When i made plans for the trip, i figured that there'd be things worth seeing in LA, but aside from playing volleyball on Manhattan Beach (assuming i can find a pickup game bad enough), it looks like the playing poker at the Commerce and Bicycle Casinos is all i'd want to do.

This is sad. Probably more for me than for LA, but i think both are culpable. If you people know of anything worthwhile to do or eat in LA, lemme know.

Each shool creates one space sound

I'm about at my limit on vacation time (i can only have 30 days banked at any given time), so i'm going to Los Angeles from February 1-11 to play in a couple poker tournaments, see [info]punkalicia, and whatever else i can find to amuse me. The poker tournaments should be juicy, since players at the Commerce are notoriously over-aggressive and bad. One problem is that we aren't starting with enough chips, which makes it too much of a crapshoot, especially again hyper opponents. Still, i imagine that my Expected Value from the two $1060 Limit Holdem tournaments should cover the $1K in expenses for airfare, accommodations, and rental car.

I haven't been to LA as an adult except for a brief job interview. I've been trying to think of things that i'd want to see (aside from friends) or do there, and i'm drawing a blank. My understanding is that LA is supposed to have attractions other than legalized poker. Do you people know what those attmight be?

I'm staying at the Montebello Best Western, which is cheap, has free internet access, and is convenient to the Commerce Casino (and not too far away from the Bicycle Casino).

This time, i'm a complete loser.

I decided to go ahead and use the $1500 in cashable chips to enter the second $1500 Limit Event #11. There were 701 participants and they paid the top 72.

I busted out in 104th after my KK failed to thwart AA. Gah.

A long day with nothing to show for it. It would have been much better to end up in 701st, but that's poker. At least i didn't end up 73rd.

I'm a loser.

I got busted on my 10th hand today and ended up in 61st place. For those that want details, you can click here about my pocket AA being no good.

The good news is that because it took 10 hands for this to happen, i moved up a money level and took home $3645.

Must go find some puppies to kick, now.

Why am i not sleeping?

I survived Day 1 of the WSoP $1500 Limit Holdem Event #4. We’re down to 69 of 1068 players, so i'm in the money. I only have 13,500 chips after pissing away several thousand on an open-ended straight draw on the bubble. Average stack is 23,200 or so with the chip leader having 65,000. Right now i'm gauranteed $2916 and will get another $700 or so if i last past 5 more people, i think. However, i'd like to try to win much more than that, so i may wind up taking a risk and get knocked out 65th and have to settle for $2916. Ah well.

It starts back up 2 pm Pacific Time. G'night, people.

Seek & Destroy

I leave tomorrow in another attempt to make my fortune via gambling.

Continental CO497
Wed., Jun. 28, 2006
Depart: 9:20 a.m. IAH
Arrive: 10:32 a.m. LAS

Continental CO497
Mon., Jul. 10, 2006
Depart: 9:40 a.m. LAS
Arrive: 2:52 p.m. IAH

My first $1500 Limit Holdem Event is on Thursday. I recently read that my second seat is being paid to me in cashable chips, so i may try using that $1500 to enter one-table satellites and convert it into a $3000 seat...or better yet, a $3000 seat and the original $1500 event i intended on entering.

I'll have some e-mail access while i'm pokering, but i ain't doing much other internet stuff.

Good thing i have vacation time

More poker babble.

Saturday night, i won another World Series of Poker preliminary event satellite. This one gives me a $1500 that i can apply to the WSoP event of my choice plus $500 cash for expenses.

What was especially cool (to me) is that i opened a Full Tilt Poker account specifically because they were the only casino i knew that had Limit qualifying tourneys. Saturday was the first Limit satellite that they held since i joined and i won it. Put up $26 and defeated 106 other players to claim the one seat, neatly justifying my reasons for opening the account in the first place. As an unexpected bonus, i've been unsustainably profitable in their regular cash ring games after almost 40 hours of play.

Anyway, i now have to decide what i'm going to use my extra entry on. Right now, i'm most likely to enter the $1.5K Limit Event from 6/29 to 7/1. I can then enter an Orleans Open Limit Event on July 2-3; possibly go to Los Angeles to visit Ms. [info]punkalicia for a BBQ wedding celebration on the 4th; get back in time for the other $1.5K Limit Event on the 6th to 8th; and finally putz around until flying back on July 11. There's a slight possibility i might weasel another $1.5K entry out of Full Tilt, in which case i'd probably apply both towards the $3K Limit July 15-17.

I think i'm 0-for-7 trying to qualify for the WSoP Main Event, with three 6th place finishes. I'm not sure that this is the wisest investment, but entering the Main Event at least opens the possibility of a life-changing payoff.

FYI, i'm again going to reserve a room with 2 queen beds, so if anyone (i like) wants a free place to sleep in Vegas while i'm there, lemme know.

In other news, i had no trouble sleeping after my win on Saturday night, so i felt less like a dork than last time.

news, recent

- I learned that i'm a "total hottie." Granted this was while i was scorekeeping/administrating tennis for the Special Olympics, but who am i to disagree? Two of the athletes (~14-year-old girls) were giggling on the side of the court, and when a mom asked about what, they said that "that guy is a total hottie." Mom asked which one (since there was a conventially attractive man helping me out), they pointed to me and giggled some more. Turns out, the way to a Down's Syndrome girl's heart is through yelling at them.

Later, one of them asked if i was married or had a girlfriend. Not knowing how to respond, i decided to exploit her ken-lust thusly, "I'm not telling. However, if you return one of these serves, i'll give you a hug at the end of the match."

She returned her first serve of the game.

- A high school graduation for a class of 16 students should not take 2.5 hours. Especially when i'm not allowed to heckle. Furthermore, anyone who, without a trace of irony, begins a speech with "Websters defines 'commencement' as..." should be immediately gonged off the stage and garroted.

- Sunday night, i won me an entry into one of the preliminary World Series of Poker events that they hold in the weeks preceding the Main Event. In retrospect, i should never have ever entered that qualifier. Because my eyes still somewhat suck, i had only been in one or two multi-table tournaments since my surgery and i forgot how long they took. This only had 66 players in it and given that the 248 player tourney i won took just over 5 hours, i figured this one might take around 2.5 hours. It took 4 hours and my eyes were ready to explode by the end. Also, because it didn't end until 1:30 am and i couldn't fall to sleep until 3:00 even with sleeping pills (waking up at 6:30), i was not in optimal condition for work. This necessitated taking a half-day vacation to take a nap.

Anyway, enough of me finding the black lining around the silver cloud of my victory. I won a $1000 seat into a No-Limit Holdem tournament on July 10 and $500 cash for expenses. However, since i'm a much better and more experience Limit tournament player, i wrote Absolute Poker an e-mail trying to weasel myself into one of the $1,500 Limit Holdem events, explaining how it was in their best interest for me to do well and that i'd be more likely to do so there. I wasn't too optimistic, because i figured it'd be a hassle making an exception for me...especially since they are only running WSoP satellites for the Main Event, the $1K event i won, and for the "Ladies-Only" event.

Nonetheless, they were "more than happy to accommodate my request," so i'll be in Vegas for the $1500 Limit Holdem tourney on July 6-8. Obviously, i did have to forfeit the $500 cash since they're entering me into the more expensive event.

In conclusion, yay.

Apparently, i'm the only person who likes to drink milk while pokering

The bad news: i'm still not a millionaire. The good news: i had a ridiculously good time in Vegas.

I won't bore you with too many details of the World Series. I ended up busting out the first day a little before midnight (play started at 11am). I'm generally happy with how i played, though i made one fairly large mistake when i vastly overestimated my opponent (or, possibly, vastly underrated him). That mistake brought me from 21,000 chips down to about 12K (everyone starts with 10K), so it by no means crippled me. In fact, as hands played out later, had i not made this misread, i would have ended up losing most of those chips, anyway, i would have played and missed on some other speculative hands that chose not to get involved in with my smaller stack. My luck towards the end was poor, as within 90 minutes i had three hands where my top-pair with top/great kicker on the flop ended up running into a set of tens...first guy didn't show, but the other two did...i think just to piss me off. That's poker. I outlasted a little more than half the field that started on my day, but that doesn't mean anything.

The (blessedly non-fluorescent) lighting at the WSoP wasn't pleasant. Because of this, i had to wear my frozen beauty eye-mask while playing a couple times. Before putting it on the first time, i noticed there were no cameras around. Well, it certainly didn't take ESPN long to find me, catching me as i began to explain to the people across the table why i had it on. Thus, there's a good chance i'll make their broadcast in a montage of players looking like the biggest tools at the WSoP. I highly doubt they'll show my explanation, rather just a half-second cut of me and my beauty accoutrement. Meh. I don't mind looking like an idiot, so it doesn't matter.

Other than the World Series, i played in a bunch of other No Limit Holdem poker tournaments around town. Irritatingly, these tended to have worse (faster) blind structures than online, as the casinos obviously cared more about getting the tourney over with than holding a competition based on skill. At one tournament, at the 40 minute mark, the blinds were raised to the point where the average stack had under 10 Big Blinds, which is generally considered the All-In or Fold Point. Basically, what this means is that if you choose to play a hand, you have so few chips that you may as well go all-in. This makes it a crapshoot, taking most of the skill out of poker, as it leaves no room to maneuver.

After busting out of 6 or 7 of those, i did end up cashing in both Limit Holdem tournaments that i entered at the Orleans. I liked these as the blinds were slower and most people haven't the slightest clue how to play Limit tourneys...employing a strategy nearly opposite what it should be. I ended up 9th in one (~$100 profit) and split the largest share ($920) with one other guy when we chopped the pot with 6 people left in the other. The downside was that the Orleans had fluorescent lighting in their poker room. Moreover, while the poker room was non-smoking, it was open enough that my semi-allergic lungs were bothered by the smokers 15' away.

I know this will come as something of a shock, but while i wasn't playing in poker tournaments, i spent most of my time playing poker in ring (or regular) games. I eventually wound up playing at the Bellagio my last four days in Vegas. The lighting was excellent, the chairs comfortable, the dealers and staff excellent, and, most importantly, there were many outgoing friendly and interesting people playing, especially at the lowest ($4/$8) limit. Though i was making more money at higher stakes, the people there were more serious and less interesting, so i moved back to $4/$8. I even made a couple friends with whom i exchanged e-mail addresses so that we can keep in touch. Including a Canuck! On Friday, in a weird, small world moment, i sat next to a friendly guy who knew my great uncle Jim really well. It was just plain nifty to talk to people congregating from throughout the world, sharing the joy of giving me their money.

My favorite conversation was during a tournament at the Aladdin with a fellow history buff from London. For 20-30 minutes, we discoursed on British history, concentrating mostly on Stuart and Early Hanoverian periods. We each knew a lot that the other didn't. Towards the end of this, the dealer said that in all her years of dealing, this was the "most unique" conversation she had ever heard at a poker table. Apparently, poker players usually choose to discuss sports, pop culture, and, well, poker while at the table as opposed to Elizabeth "The Winter Queen" Stuart's progeny and the Act of Settlement (1701). Go figure.

I had a few celebrity sightings. I didn't play with anyone famous (James Woods and T.J. Cloutier were at adjacent tables), though Doyle Brunson almost impaled me with his motorized wheelchair as he slalomed through the crowd at 12-15 MPH, horn a-blazing. I saw famous people at the Bellagio and Wynn casinos, though the only one i talked to was David Sklansky, author of about six of the poker books i've read and owner of the best online poker forum. I also had a surprisingly friendly encounter with actress (and WSoP Ladies-Only Event winner) Jennifer Tilly and her poker playing poker boyfriend, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak, while at the Rio's buffet. To save me time, you can read about them in my post at 2+2.

I did very little sightseeing, as viewing the grotesque gaudiness of Vegas did not excite me. I didn't see a single show, nor did i make it downtown like i intended. I have much more interest in people than places, which, conveniently, meant that playing poker all day was one of the more culturally illuminating things i could do. Really.
